Hamilton: First Impression

ACE Blog Post #9

I had not watched Hamilton for a long time because I thought I had better things to do, but when it was shown in class I discovered I very much like the songs. My favourite song of the ones heard so far has to be ‘Burn’, sung by Eliza after Hamilton outed himself as cheating on her some years prior. She had such raw emotion in her voice and it carried so beautifully. That scene also is my favourite because out of all the scenes, I think it has the most prop usage and everything is very deliberate. Her actions are slow but not wary or hesitant, everything is just final. It felt like there was no going back from that moment. I also enjoyed that she actually set the letters on fire in the performance, it really added the flare needed to carry the scene over the top. My favourite character, however, has been Angelica. She made an immediate impression, with her first appearance being center stage, bold and witty, standing toe to toe with the men, which with at least in my impression was something unheard of in those times. It was refreshing for a show to have so many smart and strong female roles. I do like Eliza now that she’s becoming more fleshed out of a character, but I think Angelica is still the top of my list. She knows where her loyalties lie and sticks true to her morals, as well as being a strong, smart, witty, playful character. All in all, so far I think it is a great show.
